Research and knowledge production form a structural pillar of LNVH’s work. Good decisions start with good evidence, so we collect data, share research, and bring insights from our network into the wider conversation on gender equality in academia. At the heart of this work is the Women Professors Monitor, which tracks the representation of women among professors at Dutch universities. It shows where progress is being made and where it stalls. Used by institutions, policymakers, and our members alike, it turns knowledge into a starting point for lasting change.

The Women Professors Monitor is one of LNVH’s most visible core products. Within the Netherlands, the Monitor is regarded as the central, authoritative instrument for systematically collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data on gender relations within the academic community. It is a complex and extensive annual project, in which diverse datasets are brought together, enriched, and made accessible to administrators, policymakers, researchers, and the media. Due to the continuous growth of the Monitor – including through the addition of new indicators, more extensive classifications, and the expansion to international origin data and, later, data from NWO and KNAW institutes – the resources and work required increased substantially.

LNVH initiates targeted, large-scale, and methodologically rigorous studies on themes directly related to gender equality, social safety, and career development in Dutch academia. These studies are essential not only for clearly mapping current issues, but also for providing policymakers, administrators, and institutions with evidence-based insights and recommendations that are directly applicable within the Dutch academic context.
